The
Dogwood tree was bowing low
As they cut it for His cross.
He thought, "Don't blame me, I'm
just a tree
Where Jesus hung to save the lost."
He saw the Roman soldiers coming
And he noticed there were three.
Then, as they cut into his branches,
He wondered, "Why did God choose
me?"
"Why did God choose me," he thought?
"I'm just a little Dogwood tree.
A King hung upon my branches, there,
For all the world to see.
I'm so honored by this Savior
Who chose to die, upon my limbs,
To give this world the Gift of Life.
People owe it all to Him.
Now, I serve as a reminder,
When I branch out in the Spring,
My blooms are shaped just like His
cross
And, in the center, are the red
blood stains.
I still can't help but wonder
As I'm blowing in the breeze,
With all the trees here in this
forest,
Tell me, why did God choose me?"
In actuality, the Bible does not
tell us what type of wood the
cross Jesus was crucified on was
made of. Roman history does not go
into specifics as to how the
crosses were made or what type of
wood they were made of. As a
result, we cannot know for sure
what type of tree was used to make
the cross. There is a legend that
it was made of dogwood. This is
unlikely considering the typical
size of a dogwood tree, but this
is open to speculation and
personal opinion. In any case, I
want to thank Vickie Lambdin for a
most inspirational poem.
